Prostate Health
6 Steps you can take now to reduce your risk of prostate cancer.
1. Drink more coffee
Regular, decaf, half-caf, whatever–it’s all good, say Harvard researchers. They found that men who drank six or more cups of regular or decaf coffee were 59 percent less likely to develop advanced prostate cancer than those who eschewed the brew. More research is needed to determine what’s in java that might make it beneficial, says study author Kathryn Wilson, Ph.D.
2. Give your gland a regular workout (i.e., have lots of sex)
A 2004 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association analysed data on 29,342 men and found that guys who had 21 or more orgasms a month were about 30 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer than those who racked up only four to seven a month. A possible explanation is … wait, who cares? Tell your wife it’s doctor’s orders.
3. See red, eat red
For the 1,324th time, eat more cooked tomato products to reduce your risk of prostate cancer. This quirky link was first noticed in the 1990s by Harvard researcher Edward Giovannucci, M.D., Sc.D., and subsequent studies have confirmed the power of edible red. Credit lycopene, a pigment in tomatoes that’s more potent after they’re cooked. Aim for two-plus servings a week.
4. Move it
Exercise reduces the risk of fatal forms of prostate cancer by 41 percent. What’s more, among survivors of prostate cancer, those who exercised vigorously (playing tennis, running, swimming, or biking) for 5 hours a week had a 56 percent lower risk of death from the disease. “More activity is more protective,” says lead researcher Stacey A. Kenfield, Sc.D., of the Harvard School of Public Health.
5. Top off your oil
Fish don’t have prostates–but if they did, we’re betting they wouldn’t get prostate cancer. In studies on lab animals, the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA in fish oil inhibited tumors. Plus, Harvard researchers found that men who ate fish three times a week reduced their risk of aggressive prostate cancer by 25 percent.
6. Ditch the doughnuts
Men with the highest blood levels of trans fats have more than twice the prostate-cancer risk of men with the lowest levels. Trans-fatty acids increase inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which may play a role in prostate cancer. Avoid commercially baked doughnuts and cookies, as well as packaged baked goods containing hydrogenated oil.~Jake West

Dramatic finishes at the Hang Ten Surf Lifesaving Nationals
Dramatic finishes at the Hang Ten Surf Lifesaving Nationals
Stanford Slabbert
The final two events of the 2010 Hang Ten Lifesaving South Africa Surf Nationals, that concluded at Bluewater Bay beach on Saturday afternoon, highlighted the closest ever finish in the seniors division.

With just several points separating the top three clubs, the competitors knew that every placing counted. In one of the finest swims of the championships, Luke Nisbet, of Pirates, entered the surf in fourth place, after trailing behind Durban Surf’s Blane Woods after the board and surf ski legs of the Ironman final. Nisbet closed the gap on the leaders and then outswam them in the tough return leg to the shore in the strong westerly winds, which created side-on waves that hampered the competitors. Nisbet was first back on the beach and he sprinted to the line to claim the coveted title, with Durban Surfs Shaun Dias second and Blane Woods third.
Just before this, Umhlanga Rocks junior, Grant van der Walt, had spectators cheering as he took full advantage of the windswept conditions to out-manouver the field in the men’s single ski title. The tall youngster sprinted away from the lead group to win by almost 30metres, with Fish Hoek’s Jasper Mocke second and early leader, Tom Schilperoot, Fish Hoek, third, just ahead of five paddlers who hit the line together.
The Beach Relay final closed off the three day championships, with the Umhlanga Rocks team of Matthew Hindmarch, Wayne Holroyd, Simon Vickers and Luke Hindmarch recovering from a dropped baton in the semi’s, to take the title from the fast finishing Summerstrand team, who clinched silver from the defending champions, Pirates, who had to settle for third.

Durban Surf retained the senior aggregate title with 388 points, just two points clear of Fish Hoek and Umhlanga Rocks, who tied on 386 points each. Fish Hoek placed second with 10 titles to Umhlanga’s nine titles. Summerstrand were the best placed local club, placing fourth with 184 points, ahead of Pirates, 134, and Warnadoone, 45.
Close finishes and outstanding performances also dominated the junior category of the Hang Ten Nationals of 2010, with Fish Hoek dominating to win with 624 points to Durban Surfs 454. Summerstrand placed third, 297, with Pirates fourth, 234, and Big Bay fifth, 158.
Nicole Brits, of Durban Surf, was the star of the championships, wining 4 gold medals in the Under 16 ladies category and one gold, two silver and a bronze in the under 19 division, to be the competitor of the championships in both junior categories. She shared the senior ladies title with Eloise van Geysen of Fish hoek, winning two golds and a silver, for a total haul of seven golds, three silvers and a bronze.
Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club’s National team member, Mandi Maritz, retained her senior ladies beach sprint and flags titles and clubmates Ryan and Greg Louw outsprinted the other top combinations to win the double ski championship, from Fish Hoek’s Tom Schilperoot and Adam Bothma.
Marine won the Surf Boat contest, from Durban Surf and Pirates.
In the inaugural combined aggregate contest, Fish Hoek proved to be the top overall club, with 1010 points, followed by Durban Surf, 842, and Umhlanga Rocks placed third, 524. Summerstrand were fourth, with 481 points, and Pirates placed fifth, with 368.
